Sambalpuri refers to the Sambalpur region of Odisha, where this traditional weaving art originated around 12th–14th century, making it 700 years old craft. The designs and patterns of Sambalpuri Ikat are deeply connected to Odisha’s culture, nature, and spiritual beliefs, featuring meaningful motifs inspired by the region.
In Odisha, Ikat is traditionally known as Bandha Kala — Bandha meaning tying and Kala meaning art, referring to the tie-and-dye weaving technique. It comprises of two techniques:
Single Ikat
Double Ikat
The making process requires immense skill and patience, taking anywhere from 3 days to 3 months, depending on the complexity of the design involved.
Earlier used mainly for sarees and traditional wear, Sambalpuri Ikat has now evolved into modern fashion and lifestyle products like kurtas, dresses, tops, shirts, dupattas, and home décor.
